Nothing is stored and nothing is set. There is no cookie banner because there is no cookie to ask about, and there is no analytics because a six-person firm learns more from the telephone than from a chart of page views. The only files your browser fetches are the ones on this domain: the stylesheet, two small scripts, the images and the hero video.

The assessment, while you are filling it in

Your answers are kept in your own browser, in local storage, so you can leave and come back. They are also written into the address bar, so the link can be sent to somebody else to finish — which means anybody you send that link to can read your answers. Neither of those reaches us. Nothing is transmitted while you are answering.

You can clear it at any time with the "start again" button on the assessment, or by clearing site data in your browser.

The assessment, if you send it

Pressing send transmits, in one request: the answers you gave, the two or three areas they pointed at, and the name, business, e-mail address, telephone number and note you typed. The server then does exactly four things.

1. Writes it to a file

   One JSON line appended to a log inside the application directory, which is not reachable from the web. This happens first, before any e-mail, so a mail failure cannot lose an enquiry.

2. Records the address the request came from

   Alongside the enquiry, and separately in a small rate-limit file that remembers how many submissions have come from that address in the last hour. The rate-limit records are the only reason the address is kept separately and they age out of use after an hour.

3. E-mails it to the office

   Over authenticated SMTP to the mailbox for this site.

4. E-mails a copy to you, if you ticked the box

   The same summary you saw on the screen, carrying the same notice about what it is and is not.

There is no database on this website. Nothing is passed to any third party, nothing is used for advertising, and nothing is sold. The only external service involved at any point is the mail server that carries the two messages.

How long any of it is kept

• An enquiry: for as long as we might reasonably act on it, and then it is deleted. If you ask us to delete it sooner, we do, and you do not have to give a reason.
• The rate-limit record: an hour, at which point it stops being consulted, and it is overwritten the next time that address submits anything.
• What is in your own browser: until you clear it. We cannot see it and cannot clear it for you.
• Working papers from an engagement: two years, then destroyed, unless you ask for them sooner.
